Colt Model 1849 Revolver // The "Gun That Won The West"
Product Description
Antique Colt Model 1849 Percussion Pocket Revolver, manufactured in 1856, and almost certainly saw action during the Civil War years. In excellent condition for its age, with all serial numbers correctly matching on barrel, receiver, trigger guard, grip and cylinder, and with its original wood grips. Signs of wear and use overall, including scuffs, dents and wood losses typical for a pistol of this age. The barrel has the two-line Samuel Colt New York address “ADDRESS CCL SAM’L COLT NEW YORK CITY”. The cylinder still shows traces of the stagecoach robbing scene that was engraved on it, along with “COLTS PATENT” and serial number. Silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap, with a one-piece, smooth wood grip. Grip has been sanded and revarnished at one time. Brass bead front sight with "V" hammer notched rear sight. The bottom of the grip exhibits multiple carved notches, possibly indicating “kill notches” collected by the original owner! In nice condition but the cylinder and trigger do not engage properly. Colt Serial No. 123683. 4-inch octagonal barrel, .31 Caliber. Entire pistol length 9 inches. Ex Fairfield, Maine collection. \*\*\*The Colt model 1849 is sometimes referred-to as “the Gun that Won the West” as it was the preferred sidearm of cowboys, outlaws and lawmen alike during the Gold Rush and Westward Expansion.
