Medieval Bronze Archer's Ring // 13th-15th century AD
Product Description
Medieval Europe, c. 13th–15th century AD. A large bronze archer's ring, with nicely incised details imitating the visor of a Greek or Roman helmet. Excellent glossy olive-green to black patina. L: 1.25”, about a US size 14. To protect their hands during battle, archers wore a ring on their thumb to protect the pad when drawing back the bowstring. This action was done by hooking the thumb around the string just under the arrow, and bracing it against the first finger. Ex Los Angeles, CA private antiquities collection.
