Rare Greek Gold Plaque of Dionysos // 3rd-1st Century BC
Product Description
An incredibly rare Greek gold plaque depicting Dionysos, c. 3rd-1st Century BC. An ancient Greek hand crafted gold plaque medallion featuring an embossed profile of the face of the god Dionysos, the Greek god of wine-making, fertility, festivity, insanity, religious ecstasy, and theatre. There are also four small holes around the edges, suggesting that this piece was sewn or nailed onto another object, possibly as a decorative element on clothing, armor, or a religious artifact. The surface has a hammered, wavy texture and the depiction is a bit harder to see than these photos allow. Made of not the purest gold, as was common in the ancient world. Measures 1 1/8”, weighs 1.63 grams. Ex New York City private collection.
