It is the 1863 $ 5 Legal Tender

The artistry and coloring were in a class of its own! For a note that is 163 years old it’s amazing that the colors are still very bold.
The note was printed in 1862, which was right in the middle of the Civil War! It was actually printed to finance the Civil War effort by the Abraham Lincoln administration.
The first $2 notes (called United States Notes or "Legal Tenders") were issued by the federal government in 1862 and featured a portrait of the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton (1789-1795).
The front states “ACT OF JULY 11TH 1862. THE UNITED STATES WILL PAY THE BEARER TWO DOLLARS AT THE TREASURY IN NEW YORK / WASHINGTON / AUGUST 1ST. 1862. It was printed by the NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY. It also states “PATENTED APRIL 23RD 1860”.
On the back of the note it states “THIS NOTE IS A LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE EXCEPT DUTIES ON IMPORTS AND INTEREST ON THE PUBLIC DEBT; AND IS RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL LOANS MADE TO THE UNITED STATES”.
It also has a low serial number. There are only 5 digits: “45630”
The note is graded by PCGS in FINE 12. Higher grades command pricing starting at
$ 2,000 and increase accordingly. There are some pieces missing and it has been repaired, but it is priced accordingly. This is a great way to start your “large sized” currency collection. It’s perfect to share with the family. The large sized note category has always been the most sought after.
