1863 $ 5 Legal Tender Note PMG 10 FR 63 B # 343

This note is a great building tool to start your large size note collection. Large sized currency is what our country used to pay for transactions for business, US Customs duties, and even your taxes. This was the start of our economy! Lots of history.

The most sought after signature combination of Chittenden and Spinner are featured on the note. What makes it rare is that the signatures were engraved on the notes.

The artistry and coloring were in a class of its own! For a note that is 162 years old it’s amazing that the colors are still very bold.

The front has “The number FIVE, THE UNITED STATES PROMISE TO PAY TO THE BEARER FIVE DOLLARS, WASHINGTON, MARCH 10TH 1863, PAYABLE AT THE TREASURY OF THE UNITED STATES AT NEW YORK, REGISTER OF THE TREASURY, TREASURER OF THE UNITED STATES, PATENTED 30 JUNE 1857, ACT OF MARCH 3D. 1863, AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. NEW YORK, NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY”.
The back image features ornate designs in green ink.
The back has “FIVE / V, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, THIS NOTE IS A LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, EXCEPT DUTIES ON IMPORTS AND INTEREST ON THE PUBLIC DEBT, AND IS RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL LOANS MADE TO THE UNITED STATES”.

The note was printed in 1863, which was right in the middle of the Civil War! It was actually printed to finance the Civil War effort by the Abraham Lincoln administration.

It also has a low serial number. There are only 5 digits: “57343”

The note is graded by PMG 10 Very Good.

A single higher grade commands pricing in the thousands and increase accordingly. There are some pieces missing, but it is priced accordingly. This is a great way to start your “large sized” currency collection. It’s perfect to share with the family. The large sized note category has always been the most sought after.
