This note is a great building tool to start your large size note collection. Large sized currency is what our country used to pay for transactions for business, US Customs duties, and even your taxes. This was the start of our economy! Lots of history.

The artistry and coloring were in a class of its own! For a note that is 147 years old it’s amazing that the colors are still very bold.

The front states “THIS NOTE IS A LEGAL TENDER FOR TWO DOLLARS. ENGRAVED AND PRINTED AT THE BUREAU, ENGRAVING & PRINTING. SERIES OF 1878. THE UNITED STATES WILL PAY TO BEARER TWO DOLLARS. ACT OF MARCH 3D. 1863. The portrait of JEFFERSON. UNITED STATES NOTE. WASHINGTON, D.C.

The back states: SERIES OF 1878. COLUMBIAN BANK NOTE CO. TWO – 2. PATENTED July 24, 1866. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WASHINGTON, D.C. PRINTED AT THE BUREAU, ENGRAVING & PRINTING, TREASURY DEPT.

THIS NOTE IS A LEGAL TENDER AT ITS FACE VALUE FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, EXCEPT DUTIES ON IMPORTS AND INTEREST ON THE PUBLIC DEBT.

COUNTERFEITING OR ALTERING THIS NOTE OR PASSING ANY COUNTERFEIT OR ALTERATION OF IT, OR HAVING IN POSSESSION ANY FALSE OR COUNTERFEIT PLATE OR IMPRESSION OF IT, OR ANY PAPER MADE IN IMITATION OF THE PAPER ON WHICH IT IS PRINTED IS FELONY, AND IS PUNISHABLE BY $5,000 FINE, OR 15 YEARS IMPRISONMENT AT HARD LABOR OR BOTH.

They didn’t mess around in those days, if you counterfeited a note, you did some hard time!

There are numerous graphics and filigreed scrollwork all over the note, which are still in excellent condition.

It features the “bracelet” reverse, “C.W. Casilear’s patent Nov 24, 1868”, it has “UNITED STATES 2” ALL AROUND THE BORDERS, It has “33” on the very top of the note. It also features the Washington Capitol Building in the center and below that are people walking and on horseback, and horse drawn carriages. The bottom right features bright red “RAYS” scrollwork.

The note is graded by PMG in Very Fine 20. A solid grade for this note. A single higher grade commands pricing in the thousands and increase accordingly.

Higher grades command pricing starting at $ 2,000 and increase accordingly.

The note will be encased in a long-term preservation holder. The holder is made to enhance the presentation of the encapsulated note and protects against tampering. The note pictured is the exact note you will receive.
