This note is a great building tool to start your large size note collection. Large sized currency is what our country used to pay for transactions for business, US Customs duties, and even your taxes. This was the start of our economy! Lots of history.

An estimated 21 million Series of 1886 $2 Silver Certificates were printed between 1886 and 1891, with just a miniscule fraction surviving today!

The artistry and coloring were in a class of its own! For a note that is 139 years old it’s amazing that the colors are still bold.

While Silver Certificates began in 1878, the Series of 1886 would be the first issuance of denominations smaller than $10. These lower denominations would see a lot of circulation given their smaller face values and their replacing the heavy silver dollars that people didn’t like using in commerce.

The front features the bust of General Winfield Scott, who was a Union general during the Civil War. Along the left border of the face is printed “ACT OF AUGUST 4, 1886,” referring to an appropriations act that allowed Silver Certificates to be printed in denominations of $1, $2, and $5.

The front states” THIS CERTIFIES THAT THERE HAVE BEEN DEPOSITED IN THE TREASURY OF THE UNITED STATES TWO SILVER DOLLARS. Payable to the bearer on demand, Washington, D.C.”.
The back of the note, all in green, showcases an elaborate mixture of geometric designs, some reminiscent of flowers along with other plant life. In a serpentine layout is “UNITED STATES SILVER CERTIFICATE” and further legal tender text stating “THIS CERTIFICATE IS RECEIVABLE FOR CUSTOMS, TAXES AND ALL PUBLIC DUES, AND WHEN SO RECEIVED MAY BE REISSUED.”
At the bottom is the fabulous round printer logo “BUREAU, ENGRAVING & PRINTING.”
It has scrollwork with “TWO DOLLARS and SILVER CERTIFICATE intertwined with the number 2 all around the borders.

The note is graded by PMG in FINE 12. Higher grades command much higher pricing in the thousands!

There are some pieces missing, but it is priced accordingly. This is a great way to start your “large sized” currency collection. It’s perfect to share with the family. The large sized note category has always been the most sought after.
