1935 A $ 1 HAWAII - WWII EMERGENCY ISSUE NOTE PMG 67 EPQ # 025

Being offered today is a beautiful example of a 1935 A $ 1 “HAWAII WW II EMERGENCY ISSUE” Series Silver Certificate. The note is graded by PMG in 67 Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ).

One of the great features of the note is the “overprint” of “HAWAII” on both sides of the front and very distinctively on the back.

Though the notes carry the 1935A series date, they were only issued for three short years – from 1942-1944. After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, U.S. Military officials surmised that the invasion of Hawaii was imminent. So In 1942 this Special World War II Emergency Issue note was issued to the troops in North Africa.

A $ 1 Silver Certificate was printed with a brown seal and serial numbers instead of blue treasury seal. These notes could be declared worthless and obsolete if seized by the enemy.

Most of these notes were destroyed by the Military when they wore out or were replaced, making them difficult to come by.

Faced with a $200 million stockpile of US currency, military officials opted to destroy all the recalled regular currency instead of overcoming the logistical problems of shipping the notes back to the mainland. At first, a local crematorium was pressed into service to burn the notes. To ensure complete destruction, a fine mesh was placed on the top of the chimneys to catch and recirculate unburnt scraps of currency escaping the fire.
Destruction of the notes was slow, and pressed with time, the bigger furnaces of the local Aiea Sugar Mill sugar mill were requisitioned to help burn the currency.
