Vintage 1961-1965 Civil War Centennial Commission "Let Us Have Peace" Ulysses S. Grant & Robert E. Lee Bronze Medallion. It has the original box by Metallic Art Co!
It depicts Confederate general Robert E. Lee, who surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, also shown here, at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, in 1865.
The legends on the obverse are quotes from the two leaders: “Let Us Have Peace” became General Grant’s campaign slogan when he ran for president in 1868. At Appomattox, Lee released his officers and soldiers, bidding them return home with “a consciousness of duty faithfully performed.”
This medal was issued to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Civil War.
The medal has been well taken care of these years. The original box helped with this.
This medal, designed by Joseph Renier’s was commissioned by the Civil War Centennial Commission to pay homage on the centennial of four years of hostilities between North and South.
The reverse has the name and official seal of the Civil Was Centennial Commission.
