Ehlers Estate is an organically farmed, 42-acre estate nestled between the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain Ranges in the northern, narrowest part of Napa Valley. Our historic tasting room, the original winery built of tuff and basalt from the surrounding mountains, was completed in 1886 by Bernard Ehlers, a visionary Sacramento grocer. Today, we are owned by the Leducq Charitable Trust, established in 1996 by Jean & Sylviane Leducq. After spending most of their life in Paris and a few years in Virginia, their passion for food, wine, and the American Dream brought them to Napa Valley. Their legacy of generosity and excellence continues to inspire us in every endeavor.
The 2021 Portrait is a carefully crafted blend of all four red varietals grown on our estate and showcases our treasured vineyards. It has a bright and lifted aromatic profile featuring Luxardo cherries, citrus zest, and strawberry jam. A fine line of fresh, mouth-watering acidity weaves through silty tannins that coat the palate, with layers of juicy plum, persimmon, rhubarb, and a touch of sea spray that persist throughout.
Vintage Notes: Of the many great vintages here in Napa, 2021 is high amongst them. A dry winter and warm spring limited vine growth, resulting in small, intensely concentrated berries. A mild autumn allowed for ideal ripening conditions, delivering perfectly matured fruits to the great relief of winemakers everywhere. The wines will slowly unfurl over what will be an exceptionally long window, each stage revealing new dimensions and features.
